Title: Hair loss during postpartum period Causes and management

Biography

Biography: El Fradi Fatma

Abstract

Diffuse hair loss in the postpartum period is a well-known situation.

However, little is known about the mechanism and causes of this problem.

It is proposed that the percentage of anagen hairs in pregnant woman is significantly higher than no pregnant.

Hair loss seems to increase within 3-6 months after delivery because the conversion f hair from anagen to telogen is slowed down during pregnancy and is accelerated postpartum.

Clinically evident hair loss may occur immediately after delivery or after a variable latent period up to several months postpartum.

There are several theories for why this distressing phenomenon occurs (drop in estrogen level / physiological stress/prolactin/ nutritional factors/anemia…)

Fortunately, this process is self-limited.

Most women will experience recovery from the hair loss although this may take up to 15 months.

In the management of women with hair loss after pregnancy, all treatments seems to work best when initiated early and when used in combination.
